Brown was founded in 1764 by the Baptist Church to follow the other Protestant sects that already had a college in New England. In 1891, women were admitted to Pembroke college, a dependency of the university, with which it finally merged in 1971. The same year was introduced a revolutionary curriculum, by now the norm in American colleges; it abandoned compulsory courses for bachelor's students and let them choose the options they want. Brown is a member of the very prestigious Ivy-League, a college sport tournament and an informal group of eight prominent northeastern universities.

It is now a small university of more than 8,000 students, of whom a quarter are postgraduates.
