Amedeo Modigliani (1884 - 1920): Italian expressionist painter whose early work was influenced by cubism and African art. He soon developed his characteristic stlye of elongated form, purity of line and relaxed atmosphere. Well known among his Paris dwelling contemporaries, his work did not become known to the public until after his death.
