Danish landscape painter of the Copenhagen School who spent most of his short life in Italy. He attended the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts from 1824 where he studied under Christoffer Eckersberg. In 1830 he set off for Rome and made trips to a number of places in the Roman Campagna, drawing inspiration from the landscape, which he painted with a light palette. He travelled extensively in Europe and was found dead in 1838 in an hotel room in Patras, Greece.
