Born in Florence, Rosso was largely self-trained.  He was employed in the workshop of Andrea del Sarto before moving to Rome. After the Sack of Rome in 1527 the artist moved to France and worked for the court of Francis the I.  He painted frescoes in the royal ch√Ęteau at Fontainebleau and this was to have a significant influence on French art at the time.  He is known for his abstract forms, freer technique and strong colours.
