Born the son of Charles Willson Peale, Rembrandt Peale was born in Philadelphia, in 1778, the fourth child of seven siblings. The Peales trained all of their children in drawing and painting. Young Rembrandt, at the age of seventeen, gained a commission (via his father) to paint George Washington. The younger portrait is a self portrait.
