He became associate of the Academy on 31 December 1766, then academician on 16 January 1771; his reception piece was The Oath of Brutus - also his most famous work, which later inspired David for his painting on the Horaces.

He took part of the decoration of the Chapel of Saint Louis, located in the Ecole Militaire, Paris.
