Giovanni Baglione
(Italian, 1566 - 1643)
This person is associated with: Caravaggisti, Baroque

Baglione was born and worked in Rome. He was a contemporary of Caravaggio and his style in the use of light and dark is reminiscent of the latter and that of Guercino. However, Giovanni was Caravaggio's rival and adversary and their animosity is noted throughout his lifetime. In 1621-22 he was court painter in Mantua to Duke Ferdinand Gonzaga. He produced an important number of biographies of other artists who were working alongside Baglione in Rome and he had a successful career as artist and biographer.
