One of the best known abstract painters in 20th Century British art, he was one of the founders of the St Ives's School, Cornwall.  Nicholson started out as a landscape and still life painter but after a visit to Paris in 1924 he was enthused by cubism and started producing abstract paintings.  He was married to the sculptor Barbara Hepworth and during World War II they moved to Cornwall.
