Roelant Savery

Dutch painter born in Flanders whose parents sought shelter in the Dutch Republic during the war against Spain. In Amsterdam, then Utrecht, Savary was known for his luxurious still lifes and landscapes with many animals, including dodos, the famous extinct bird. He is best known for his association with the city of Prague, where he worked from 1603 to 1613 for Rudolph II of the Hapsburgs.
