Max Ernst

Born in Brühl, near Cologne, Ernst was one of the founder members of the Dada Movement and later of Symbolism.  He became a US citizen in 1948 and later a French citizen in 1958.  After studying philosophy and psychology at Bonn University he abandoned his academic work for painting.
