Jean-Jacques Henner
(French, 1829 - 1905)
by Jean-Jacques Henner
This person is associated with: Academism

French Academic Painter.  The artist was in Rome from 1859 to 1864.  Henner repeated many themes in order to practice a form of chiaroscuro and sfumato (gradations of form to produce a blurred effect).  These can be admired in the large collection of his works housed in the Henner museum in Paris.  He painted a large number of classical nudes and religious themes in order to achieve an effect not dissimilar from that of the French Impressionists.
