El Greco
(Greek, 1541 - 1614)
This person is associated with: Mannerism

Cretan-born painter, sculptor, and architect who settled in Spain. His real name was Domenikos Theotokopoulos but is universally known as El Greco because of his Greek ancestry. Crete was then part of the Venetian Empire.  At about nineteen years of age he moved to Venice where he worked in Titian's studio, and was strongly influenced by the styles of Tintoretto and Jacopo Bassano.  After about fifteen years in Italy he moved to Spain and finally settled in Toledo, where he remained for the rest of his life employed almost exclusively by churchly patrons.  The distortions in his paintings (in the Mannerist style) were once believed to be the result of astigmatism in his eyes but are now recognized as carefully planned to produce a specific emotional effect.
