by Charles Conder

English born Australian painter.

Charles Conder was a painter of landscapes, fans, and arcadian fantasies. He was also an occasional etcher and lithographer. Born in London on October 24, 1868, he spent his early childhood in England and India and emigrated to Australia in 1884. He studied in Sydney and Melbourne, where he painted mainly landscapes, and exhibited with the Australian Impressionists in 1889. He studied in Paris on his return to Europe in 1890, and was influenced by Anquetin, Watteau, the Saint-Aubin brothers and Puvis de Chavannnes. In 1897 he settled in London and made frequent trips to Paris and Dieppe. His later paintings included seascapes and landscapes in a more naturalistic style. Charles died at Virginia Water on April 9, 1909.
