Dutch marine and landscape painter, born Amsterdam. His works are relatively few in number - about 150 survive. He is considered the leading Dutch marine painter of the 17th century. His paintings usually show river or estuary scenes with calm waters and reflections from the skies and the cloud formations. This was Cappelle's speciality.
