Henri Mauperché
(French, 1602 - 1686)
This person is associated with: Baroque, Classicism
French classical painter.

He moved to Rome between 1634-9 with Louis Boullogne the Elder and there became acquainted with the works of Claude Lorrain, whom he followed. Consequently, he produced a lot of landscapes with classical ruins in bright summer days. He also decorated the Hotel Lambert on the Ile St-Louis in Paris with Eustache Le Sueur and Pierre Patel the Elder, his main opponent.

He was among the first painters to be admitted in the French Academy of painting (1 February 1648). On 13 November 1655, he became the first and only landscapist to be appointed professor in the history of the Academy.

As with the other classical painters of landscapes of the time, he did not sign or date his works, which are often confused with those of La Hyre or Patel.
