One of the major artists belonging to the Golden Age of Danish painting.  In 1822 he studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Art, during which time he came under the influence of Christoffer Eckersberg.  In the years between 1838 and 1840 he travelled in Italy and painted en plein air in and around Naples, including the island of Capri, which caught his imagination in several of his works.  During the artist's lifetime he painted portraits of many family members as well as landscapes and architectural views. He is today considered the most renowned of Danish painters of the early 19th century.
