French marine painter. He trained under Jacques Viali (1681-1745).

Vernet was the most successful French marine painter of the 18th century.

His early talent in landscape painting caught the eye of Marquis de Caumont who decided to sponsor him for the trip to Rome in 1734. There, he saw the works of the Italian Vedutisti - painters of city panoramas - such as Canaletto and the artist adopted their style.

His production was rapid and he achieved great success; he was consequently appointed French academician in 1746 while still in Rome.

His most famous work and biggest royal commission was the series the Ports of France, which he left incomplete (15 paintings out of 24).
