His real name was Giovanni Antonio Canal.

Canaletto was the foremost Venetian veduta painter of the 18th century. His output consisted largely of meticulously detailed contemporary scenes of Venice for which he received many commissions from English tourists. Joseph Smith, the British Consul in Venice, also paid Canaletto to produce a large number of Venetian scenes, which Smith later sold to King George III of Great Britain. Canaletto also visited England and painted similar scenes in and around London.
