Dutch Romantic painter who spent most of his life and career in France; he precisely became French in 1850.

Trained by his father, court painter of Louis Bonaparte, king of Holland during Napoleon's Empire, he came in France in 1811 after his death. There, he studied under Guérin but did not follow his neoclassical style, favouring instead the emerging Romanticism.
