Joos van Cleve became a member of the Painter's Guild of Antwerp in 1511. It is believed he was born in Cleves in the Lower Rhine region and was active mainly in Antwerp. His style combines the painting techniques of the Netherlandish School with Renaissance styles. He was the father of Cornelius van Cleve, also a painter.
