He won the Prix de Rome in 1768 for Germanicus Calming the Revolt in his Camp against Suvée.

He is appointed academician in 1777 and became one of the main neoclassical artists, challenging David, but his career declined during the Revolution and Empire.

He taught Meynier and Mérimée.
