(French, 1824 - 1904)
This person is associated with: Academism

French Academic painter and sculptor.

He trained under Delaroche.

He was the leader of French Academism, along with Bouguereau and Cabanel, and the most resolute enemy of the impressionists and any other Avant-Garde movement, saying they were the "disgrace of French Art". He had a pronounced taste for Orientalism and his paintings often display scenes of harem.
