He won the Prix de Rome in 1711 for his Ruth gleaning in Boaz's field.

Elected member of the French Academy in 1718, professor in 1733, then appointed Premier peintre du Roi in 1736.

Exhausted by his work and depressed after the death of his wife, he committed suicide.
