by Jacopo Tintoretto
This person is associated with: Renaissance, Mannerism

Italian painter from Venice, Jacopo Robusti (called Tintoretto because his father was a dyer) was the last of the great Venetian mural painters of the Renaissance.  He was famous for his speed and facility with which he painted.  His style was based on "the colour of Titian and the design of Michelangelo".  He spent all his life in Venice and, like Veronese, he painted very large canvases with intense colours and very complex poses.
