Born in Liverpool, England, Stubbs was self-taught. He spent 18 months dissecting and drawing horses in preparation for his greatest achievement: the depiction of the horse. He is celebrated as the greatest horse painter in history, he meticulously studied the characteristics of each horse he was commissioned to paint.
