Sir Stanley Spencer
by Henry Lamb

Born in Cookham, Berkshire, a place that is almost synonymous with the artist, Spencer remains one of the most individual of artists of the 20th Century.  He painted numerous religious scenes, depicted as if taking place in Cookham, as well as portraits, landscapes and sexually-charged subject matter.  He is celebrated for a number of large murals he painted for the Sandham Memorial Chapel.
