Willem Kalf
(Dutch, 1610 - 1693)
This person is associated with: Dutch Golden Age

Dutch painter who specialized in still life and became one of the most celebrated in this type of genre.  He went in France in 1640 and spent six years in Paris, during which time he was influenced by the Le Nain brothers.  He painted still lifes with peasants at work in the background. After his return to the Netherlands, he concentrated his skills on still life with fruit and precious objects, such as porcelain and oriental rugs.  In his masterly handling of texture, as seen in his many still life works, he has often been compared to Vermeer.
