Also known as Matthias Stomer. Born in Utrecht, he was mainly active in Italy. His style was influenced by the works of Caravaggio de Merisi (known as Caravaggio) and the strong lighting and shadows (chiaroscuro) in many of his compositions are similar to those of the scenes created by Georges de la Tour.
