Pieter Brueghel the Younger, aka Pieter Bruegel the Younger
(Belgian, 1564 - 1638)
Portrait of Pieter Bruegel the Younger
by Anthony van Dyck

Son of Pieter Bruegel the Elder. He is known for variants and copies of the scenes painted by his father, some of which were of equal quality, and they became popular works in his lifetime. He spent his career in Antwerp and became a Master in the Painters’ Guild, Antwerp in 1584-5. He had a son, Pieter Brueghel III, who copied a number of the master’s works but are considered of inferior quality. His younger brother, Jan Brueghel, (1568-1625) was also an accomplished painter. Frans Snyders was Brueghel’s most gifted pupil.
