Charles Radoff, aka Xavier Basil Radoff
(Russian, 1894 - 1986)
Charles Radoff was born, Xavier Basil Radoff on March 15, 1894 in Izmail, Bessarabia, Russia (now Ukraine). At age 18, Radoff emigrated to the United States and lived in New York City. Radoff served in the U.S. Army Calvary during World War One. The U.S. Army Air Service acknowledged his skills as an artist. His duties included serving as aerial observer and while airborne, he would draw maps of enemy positions for use in planning by the command staff. Radoff continued sketching throughout the years and art became his vocation in the late 1950's. While living in Southern California, he opened an art gallery in The Valley. Radoff had galleries in Van Nuys, Reseda and Corona del Mar. He would display his works at the Festival of Arts in Laguna Beach, California. He was best known for his florals and seascapes. Charles Radoff died in 1986.
