Dutch Golden Age painter and draughtsman (Leiden, 13 January 1596 - The Hague, 27 April 1656). Father-in-law of Jan Steen. Apprentice of Esaias van de Velde. Master of Nicolaes Berchem and Herman Saftleven II.

Prolific painter, he produced over 1200 paintings, an enormous amount for a 17th century painter. Jan van Goyen was one of the pioneers of Dutch landscape painting. He produced a distinctive monochrome style using browns and greys.
