Born in Marseille where the artist worked primarily.  He painted still lifes, portraits and romantic fantasies as in the subject matter of the Rococo artists (Watteau, Lancret) but in a style very much of his time.  He used thick impasto with heavy dabs of oil and rich colouring and his style led the way to later artists such as Van Gogh, Derain and Soutine.
