The artist started to study with French 19th Century figure painters but later turned to landscapes, where he was strongly influenced by the tonal works of Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot.  He continued with the radiation of the so-called Barbizon painters and worked alongside the Loire, Vienne and Oise Rivers in western France.
