Prolific illustrator, engraver, painter and sculptor, born in Strasbourg.  Doré illustrated a large number of historical, biblical and mythological works including The Bible, Dante's 'Divine Comedy' and Milton's 'Paradise Lost'.  His large canvases of historical themes were very much in the academic tradition and coming in the later 19th century were mainstream and against the changing style of Impressionism that many younger artists were developing.
