Jean Lemaire, aka Le Gros Lemaire
(French, 1597 - 1659)
This person is associated with: Baroque, Classicism
French classical painter.

He studied under Claude Vignon during his early teenage years, then moved to Italy at only fifteen years of age. There, he met Poussin and shared a house with him and started a collaboration with the master of Classicism until his return to France in 1639. Indeed, as Lemaire had specialised in panoramas of idealized Roman cities, often with ruins, he frequently painted the backgrounds of Poussin's works during the 1630's.

Only 60 of his works are known. As he never signed and dated them, they are difficult to attribute with accuracy.

His younger brother Pierre, called Le Petit Lemaire, was also a painter in the same style.
