Best known as a sculptor, Stevens was also a gifted painter and designer. He spent from 1833 to 1842 studying in Italy, where he met the Danish sculptor, Thorvalden. He laid the foundations of his style in the works of the Renaissance masters, notably Raphael. Stevens designed the Wellington Monument in St Paul's Cathedral, London.
