Allan Ramsay
(Scottish, 1713 - 1784)
Self Portrait
by Allan Ramsay

Born in Edinburgh, Ramsay was the outstanding portraitist from the 1740s until the rise of Sir Joshua Reynolds in the mid 1750s. After studying in Edinburgh and London Ramsay moved to Italy and remained there from 1736 to 1738. He was in contact with Solimena in Naples. This gave him a much more sophisticated and elegant style than previous artists and can be compared with the French mid eighteenth century painters. He continued to be a serious rival to Reynolds in portraiture. In 1767 he became the principal painter to King George III.
