Michael Pacher
(Austrian, 1435 - 1498)
One of the earliest artists to introduce the principles of Renaissance painting into Germany and Austria, Pacher was born in the Tyrol. His most celebrated work is the St Wolfgang Altarpiece, in the church of St Wolfgang, Upper Austria, and completed in about 1481. This is considered one of the best examples in European art of a carved and painted altar shrine.
