Crespi was born and died in Bologna. He was the leading painter in that city in the eighteenth century. Crespi travelled mainly to northern Italy. His style combines influences from Caravaggio and the "tenebrists", Dutch seventeenth century masters and the Venetian tradition of Titian.  His pupils included Giambattista Piazzetta and Pietro Longhi.
