He trained under Vien, the first French neoclassicist. He failed at the Prix de Rome in 1787 for Nabuchodonosor Has Zedekiah's Children Killed before his Eyes (attributed to Fabre), but won it the following year with The Death of Tatius (against Girodet).

He had a very long career since he painted until his death, at 90 years old. His style evolved towards the Troubadour movement in the 1820's.
