Sir Nathaniel Dance-Holland, 1st Baronet, R.A. was born May 8, 1735 and died at East Grinstead in 1811. Dance-Holland was an English portrait painter and later a politician. He was the third som of George Dance the Elder, and added the 'Holland' suffix later in life. He studied under Francis Hayman and also studied in Italy. While in Italy, he met Angelica Kauffman. After his return to England, he became a successful portrait painter. With Francis Hayman and his architect brother, George Dance the Younger, he was one of the founding members of the Royal Academy in 1768. He was commissioned to paint Captain James Cook, actor David Garrick, as well as King George III and his queen. He gave up his artistic career in 1790 and became a Member of Parliament, serving until his death in 1811. He was made baronet in 1800, and the title became extinct upon his death.
