Joachim Patinir, aka or Patinier or Patenier
(Dutch, 1485-1524)
The Flemish painter Joachim Patinir (ca. 1485 to 1524) is generally regarded as the first landscape painter or the founder of the genre of landscape painting. He cooperated occasionally with Quentin Massys (Flemish, ca 1465-1530). There is a description of him by Albrecht Drer, written after a visit to Joachim Patinir. Today there are 22 paintings identified as being by Joachim Patinir himself and a number of paintings in his style or from his workshop or followers (among them his spectacular paintings in the Prado, in Vienna, in the National Gallery, London, in the Metropolitan Museum, New York, and in the Hermitage.)
