Painter of historical genre scenes, Meissonier was a book illustrator in his early career and was largely self-taught. He turned to small-scale painting in the 1830s and his meticulous style became popular with collectors. He was the first artist to receive the Grand Cross of the Legion d'Honneur in 1889.
