Leghe Suthers, aka John Lees Suthers
(English, 1855 - 1924)

John Lees Suthers was born at Chadderton, Lancashire, on 26 April 1855, the son of cotton manufacturer Charles Suthers. John took on the alias "Leghe" around 1883 when he began painting at Newlyn, Penzance. Leghe submitted 11 paintings to the Royal Academy between 1885-1905, but did not give his address as Newlyn until 1893. Between 1897 and 1900, Leghe Suthers moved to Porlock, Somerset. He died there a bachelor in 1924. [Biography by Steven Paul Suthers, 2005]
