Re: Duplicates

Josselin,  well spotted.

This is the same museum in Cardiff, having both Welsh and English names.  The works should be merged which I am happy to do (not so many!)

Re: Duplicates

Thanks Josselin,

I have Internet Explorer and it doesn't show the address bar as you suggested.  However, one way of overcoming duplicates is to replace the work with another work by the same artist.  In most cases this should be possible as there are still a lot of art works not listed.  I did this with a number of J-F Millet's, belonging to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, which I uploaded today.

After having uploaded many which were not listed under the museum, I found that about three existed but because they had been entered as whereabouts 'unknown' they did not show up under the museum's listing.

I must remember to search through the artist listings rather than a museum's.

However, I managed to replace those duplicates with other works by the same artist.  The only inaccuracy, as you already highlighted, is that the original uploader is still shown (but I don't think this matters too much).  It saves Chris time in having to delete duplications.

If, and when, I come across further duplicates I will see whether they can be superimposed with another work by the same artist.  If this is not possible , then I shall report the duplication here.

Hope I make myself clear!

Graham

Re: Duplicates

Josselin

I see we both entered the same painting yesterday but in two different locations!  It is Turner's 'Modern Italy - The Pifferari'  This painting is located in Glasgow's Kelvingrove Museum (not in Glasgow Museums Resource Centre - GMRC).

Are you able to replace your entry with another Turner work?

Yes I saw that. :-) I will replace it by another work of Turner as I still have about a hundred pictures of his paintings to upload.

Re: Duplicates

Chris

Unfortunately there are two entries for National Gallery London - Gustave Klimt 'Portrait of Hermone Gallia'.  My fault.

As the gallery contains only one of his works I am unable to overwrite it with another of his works.

Please delete one entry.  Thanks

Hello Graham,

You can also change the museum in the editing page, and even the artist!

Josselin

Re: Duplicates

Okay, thanks

Re: Duplicates

Done.  So we may not need to worry about deleting duplicates as they can be replaced by a new artist/location etc, which I did with the Klimt picture mentioned above.

Have spotted the following duplicates:

Caravaggio - 'The Cardsharps' (Kimbell, Fort Worth) x 2
Caravaggio - 'The Sacrifice of Isaac' (Uffizi, Florence) x 2 - dates differ but c 1601-2 is more correct.

I have rectified this

Hi Chris & Josselin

Spotted the following duplicates under MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS, BOSTON:

Rembrandt - 'Artist in his Workshop' (1629) and under 1620s (page 6)

Van Gogh - 'Ravine' (to be deleted) and 'Le Peiroulets Ravine'

Joseph DeCamp - 'The Guitar Player' (1908)

Edward Hopper - 'Lighthouse and Buildings (1927) - the later entry made 23.1.2006 entitled 'Portland Head'

Also under NATIONAL GALLERIES OF SCOTLAND - EDINBURGH:
Berthe Morisot - 'Woman and Child in a Garden'

Sorry but I don't know how to make the links!

Graham

I have rectified these by replacing duplicates

Indeed, but we cannot "delete" duplicates of museums or artists.

Re: Duplicates

Yes, understood.

But duplicates should not arise too often if one is vigilant in checking.  The problem can lie in having more than one commonly used name as I discovered with Giorgio del Castelfranco/Giorgione. There are numerous other examples in names and spellings of names (initials, abbreviations etc).

Another issue is the name(s) of a location (as you noted with Wales and has been the case with the UK royal collections.)

I am new here but am rapidly learning the process for complete checks and, hopefully, my mistakes will be less as time moves on.

Re: Duplicates

In GMRC

Rembrandt - Self Portrait with Wide-Brimmed Hat (to delete as already in Burrell Collection)

Degas - The Rehearsal (already in the Burrell)

Cezanne - Chateau du Medan (already in the Burrell)

Monet - View of Ventimiglia (1884) (In the Kelvingrove Museum and Art Gallery)

KELVINGROVE MUSEUM AND ART GALLERY

Monet - Landscape at Vetheuil (1880) - I transferred ownership to Kelvingrove and then realised that I had entered this work earlier.  Two entries in Kelvingrove now exits. The earlier entry should be deleted as the colour definition is not so accurate.

Have rectified all of the above for Glasgow

Re: Duplicates

New member has created a duplicate for artist Carolus-Duran:
http://www.the-athenaeum.org/people/detail.php?ID=222
http://www.the-athenaeum.org/people/detail.php?ID=5735

As I said above, artists who were known under their nicknames are displayed in the list under their real name, so it's a source of duplicates.

Re: Duplicates

You two are doing amazing work, and it's heartwarming after many years to see people working things out together without my presence!

Just a quick note that I'll be back on "normal" bug-fixing and upgrading duty soon - probably later next week. You might think about what's on the top of your respective lists, since it's been a few weeks and I might not remember everything. I will try to go through the forums posts, etc. but if you can think about it and be ready to give me your top few items late next week it will be more efficient, I think.

Thanks!

Re: Duplicates

Josselin

Can you not find a replacement artwork for those that are duplicated?  I have done this with a number of works (having scrutinised the long lists for Renoir, Pissarro, Cezanne, Rubens etc).  Provided one is 100% certain they are duplicates, I see no problem with this.

Re: Duplicates

Graham,

I think there is a major problem with this way of removing duplicates, because if someone else linked an artwork in another page, changing this picture will create wrong links, not only on the Athenaeum, but on the whole Internet... So I recommend not to do this anymore, except for recent duplicates.

Re: Duplicates

Hello,
Let me advise here: I agree with Josselin on the problem of "secretly changing" people's links and confusing them. For now, just list duplicates here and I'll go through every so often and clean them up. I will also work over the next couple of months to do this:

1. Create a "superuser" level and put both of you into it.
2. Start creating pages to "delete" duplicates, so you can do this directly.

Note that the "deletions" won't be true deletions; they'll set records to an inactive state, so I could restore them if someone started maliciously removing things.

Sound good?

- Chris

Re: Duplicates

It sounds good.
You should nevertheless create a more detailed page for "What's new on the Athenaeum?", where deleted works for duplication could be displayed in order to let everyone to see, as well as other edits such as new pictures, dimensions, etc.

Re: Duplicates

Sounds fine.  Thanks for the advice.  Being a 'new boy' I don't want to cause problems.

I'll keep a note of any duplications.  Unfortunately I have been doing quite a few recently and I am happy to list those that I can remember in case you wish to restore.  I did three Caravaggios today - sorry!

It is a little offputting when duplicates appear one below the other and entered seemingly on the same date.

Re: Duplicates

I should add that I'm not going out of my way to extract duplicates per se!

When there is a new entry (for example the Royal Collection Caravaggio) I always go through all the 'private collection' and 'unknown' listings to ensure that it does not already exist in the system.  That's when I invariably find a duplicate. This can be quite an immense task when the 'private collection' category is very long (as happens with the impressionists).

Yes, this is why I requested to display more than a hundred artworks per page. The ctrl+f doesn't work with separate pages.
But Chris has a lot of things to do...

If I can make my personal list of priorities, it would be:
- display more than 100 artworks per page (with a feature which let the user to choose how many of them he wants to be displayed per page).
- add a better text coding, especially for creating links.
