Re: Duplicates

Josselin,

You mentioned the inability to replace duplicates when they have links (tags).  The above examples you presented show only one entry with links.  So the other entry that has no links could be replaced?  Do you agree?

By the links problem, I also mean people from other websites who put links to the Athenaeum. If someone clicks on a link which leads to a modified entry, it will confuse him. I prefer to find a deleted page than a different one.

Hi Graham,

Moreover, many of her entries are actually works done by pupils or followers. Lot of work to fix that...
Here is an example: http://www.the-athenaeum.org/art/detail.php?id=37355
This painting was made by Giampietrino (a pupil of Leonardo) and is not in private hands, but in the Royal Academy of Arts of London.

Thanks Josselin for uncovering so many mistakes, especially this last big one.  Oh, I wish the Royal Academy had the Last Supper by Leonardo!!  This is indeed by a pupil and we can now describe this in the artist heading, thanks to Chris's work on the website.

Yes, I was surprised that Raphael had nearly 100 artworks in private collection! I moved them to the Apostolic Palace.

Re: Duplicates

Graham,
The Musee des Beaux Arts - Aix-en-Provence and the Musee Granet are the same museum.

Be careful, French museum often have several names, especially in the provinces. Moreover, they sometimes change their names.

Re: Duplicates

Oh dear.  Thanks for spotting this.  I am aware of the Musee Granet (it houses an important Ingres work).  Most French museums are entitled the same (with a few exceptions) - Musee des Beaux Arts..... - and I checked but could not find an entry for Aix (which I thought unusual)!

I will deal.

Yes I know.  That has been deleted and works transferred to the existing museum

Josselin,

As a postcript, I should explain how this came about:

There was no town against the name Rijksmuseum Twenthe and I therefore assumed it was a museum in Amsterdam.  I then attempted to amend the title name, - thus 'Rijksmuseum Twenthe - Enschede'.  When I went to correct the existing title, 'Rijksmuseum Twenthe' by adding the town - Enschede, the site did not accept it.  For some unknown and uncanny reason this happens with a number of museum entries.  I then had to change the title to 'Enschede - Rijksmuseum Twenthe', as this wording was the only acceptable form, which it now is.

This is unfortunate since any future entries will look for Rijksmuseum Twenthe and not Enschede in the alphabetical listing.  But you may wish to try changing the title to 'Rijksmuseum Twenthe - Enschede' to see if it works your end.

The problem here that I have raised previously is that the original title still appears in the dropdown list of museums and this will attract future entries.  It's the same problem with a number of museums that have changed names etc.  I hope Chris can rectify this and remove the old titles.

Not many people will know where this museum is located without the town name in the title.  There are numerous obscure museum names on this website.

Re: Duplicates

Graham,
Yes, sometimes the system doesn't allow to amend a museum. I think the Google Maps feature is to blame when it doesn't find the address. Try to copy/paste the address of the museum in the textbox; sometime it works.

Re: Duplicates

A classic example of a museum entry where it doesn't accept the city is Albright-Knox Museum in Buffalo.  I know it's Buffalo but few people would.  It's also one of the first to feature in the alphabetical listing.

I have attempted to add - Buffalo in the title for this museum, but it doesn't accept it.  Strange as the Google map it produces is correct.

I also tried to edit this one. big_smile

To Schroetterjoseph

Ludlow Bakhuisen already exists with 75 works.  You have created a duplicate.

Grateful if you would transfer/delete as appropriate.

Thanks

Re: Duplicates

I think you will find that all your entries for Ludolf Bakhuizen are duplicates of paintings on the website.

Re: Duplicates

Both names were started back in 2012.  We should include the Polish name in line with the other Polish museums.  However, this might be difficult to find for anyone other than a Pole!  The Royal Castle Warsaw is the easy identification.  I propose that we change the title of the museum to 'Royal Castle ( Zamek Krolewski w Warszawie) - Warsaw'.

This should avoid entries going elsewhere.

Chris,

The site allowed someone to enter a duplication of an artist and thereby duplicate a number of artworks.  I note that the dates entered are different and this might explain why the system permitted the duplication.  Perhaps a message, "artist already exists" could be installed to prompt the uploader when he/she enters a duplicate artist,  if not already in place.
