Re: bugs with artists

Hello Chris,

I don't know if it is a bug, but all the artworks entered for Fernand Combes have a a blank image with text written on it: http://www.the-athenaeum.org/art/list.p … p;aid=5073
The text says the image has been deleted because of the uploader: http://www.the-athenaeum.org/art/displa … ?id=307337

As the problem also appears with other entries made by member Loujema, I don't know if it is a bug or a special image displayed because of copyright claim.

Re: bugs with artists

Hello Josselin,
The contributor named "loujema" became angry at us because of our approach to copyright (which he deemed too restrictive). So, it seems he changed all of his uploads as a protest.

The site should retain all of the original images he uploaded. Because it's a relatively small number, I have been doing other things on the site before fixing these.

The other reason is that I want to build an admin web tool to easily reverse user edits (especially picture replacements, which people can use to vandalise the site), and then test it on his images.

If you want to, you can fix his edits. Or you can wait until I get to it. But I am aware of them.

Thanks,
Chris

Ok I understand. Maybe his entries are displayed in miniature - as he complained - because he didn't entered dates for his artists, who are therefore protected by copyright.

I came across several of these and I just overwrote them with another artwork.  I couldn't understand why the text appeared!

The nationality of people associated with "United Kingdom" doesn't appear in the movement lists.
For example, search for Abbey Altson in "Academism": http://www.the-athenaeum.org/mvmt/detail.php?id=11
Maybe there isn't enough place to display it.

Re: bugs with artists

It's impossible to add or see artworks for sculptors.
Examples:

Re: bugs with artists

Painter Willi Lorenz is listed as poet, although his edit page says he is a painter. Strange.

It's a pity as this is a serious omission.  Maybe Chris can permit photos of sculptures.  It works for artists who are painters and sculptors.

Re: bugs with artists

Hello Josselin and kohn1fox,
I updated the person add/edit pages to fix a bug with the sculptor profession. Now it should correctly label sculptors as "artists" which opens up the "Add an artwork" section on their page.

I also updated all sculptors to be "artists".

Please let me know if your have further problems with this.

Re: bugs with artists

Chris

That's great for works that are in institutions but what about outside works?  A large number are for example displayed externally.  Would these be exempt or am I missing something?

Graham

Re: bugs with artists

I'm sorry Graham, but I'm confused; can your clarify your question?

Re: bugs with artists

I was referring to sculptors whose works are displayed outside, some in public areas  For example much of Rodin's sculptures (bronze casts) are located outside.  Those that belong to museums are I assume okay (Rodin Museum, Paris for example) but I'm unclear as to whether works in public areas - parks, gardens, on buildings - are permitted.  Josselin's inclusion of Saint-Gaudens prompted this query.  His celebrated statue of Abraham Lincoln is in Lincoln Park, Chicago.

But then one finds several casts of the same composition (e.g. Burghers of Calais) - so I'm not sure whether we should draw the line at casts and only include original models, maquettes, original casts in museum holdings.

Re: bugs with artists

Interesting question, Graham. I'm not very knowledgeable about sculpture, but my thinking is that a sculpture should be included on our site if:

a. It's in "the canon" of art.
b. It's either the original work, the best available copy, or a historically notable copy.

Obviously both rules are subjective, but I think it's a common sense foundation. My usual definition of "in the canon" is "the artist has works in the collection of at least one museum of national prominence". You may see it differently; I know that my view is a bit more inclusive and encyclopaedic than yours...

Re: bugs with artists

Chris,
The list of artists used by the "connect an artwork to an artist" feature displays given names first, then family names. It's very uneasy to use. Could you sort artists by their last name in this list?
Thanks.

Re: bugs with artists

Adding persons worked for "Henry Holiday" (1839-1927), but not for "John Martin" (1789-1854).

I just joined this site, so it is possible that I made a mistake.

Hello GoetzKluge,
John Martin is already on the site: http://www.the-athenaeum.org/people/detail.php?ID=2938
The search feature doesn't always work, when adding a new character, search for his name manually in this list: http://www.the-athenaeum.org/art/counts … au&m=a

Please add at least one artwork for Henry Holiday or he won't appear the artist list.
