Topic: Virtual galleries to show the size of artworks visually

Hello,
This past weekend I added a new feature on the artwork Detail pages. Now if the artwork has a height an width entered, you'll see a tab called "Artwork size" which shows the work visually in a "virtual gallery". I think it's really neat, and to my knowledge no other site anywhere does this. There's a blog post about it here: http://www.the-athenaeum.org/blog/?p=30

Let us know if you have questions or run into problems with it.

Re: Virtual galleries to show the size of artworks visually

Good job Chris!
Here is the largest painting on the website (I guess), the Feast in the House of Levi, by Veronese (13m wide!):

The largest painting on canvas in history is the Paradise by Tintoretto, but I don't find a good picture of it as it seems too large to be taken in a single good photo (22.6m x 9.1m!!):

Re: Virtual galleries to show the size of artworks visually

Hello Chris,
You should maybe disable this feature for sculptures, because the size of a photo doesn't match the dimensions of the statue and the result doesn't look good. Here is an example: http://www.the-athenaeum.org/art/detail.php?ID=89631

Hello Josselin,
I added some code that check the "Medium" field. If it begins with "Sculpture" then the page will not show the artwork size tab. Thank you for pointing this out!

Re: Virtual galleries to show the size of artworks visually

Hello Chris,

There is a bug with this work: http://www.the-athenaeum.org/art/detail.php?ID=25186
as its height is much longer than its width, it exceeds the borders of the frame.
You should maybe create an intermediary level between the two current virtual galleries (the man with an umbrella and the family) for average-sized works (between 50-100 cm wide).

Re: Virtual galleries to show the size of artworks visually

Josselin,
I worked with the size parameters and now works like the one you noted are put into the "family" gallery so they don't overflow the virtual gallery. At the moment we have three sizes: small, medium, and "huge". You're right, we might want a fourth size between small and medium. That goes on my to-do list.

Thanks,
Chris

Re: Virtual galleries to show the size of artworks visually

We may also need an additional visual gallery for miniatures. Example here: http://www.the-athenaeum.org/art/detail.php?ID=138627
