Topic: Duplicates

I would like to report here the duplicates I found so far:

- the Nationalmuseum of Stockholm has two pages. Idem for the Smithonian ( and the National Gallery of Art, Washington.

- idem for Rembrandt van Rijn (one page has the complete collection of his works, the other a few dozen).

To be updated.

Re: Duplicates

It is also the case for the National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh

And the Palais des Beaux-arts de Lille :

Re: Duplicates

Hello Josselin,
I fixed the three sets of duplicate museums you found, and fixed the duplicate Rembrandts. The one I left was person ID 3325.

As you find other duplicates, please list them in this thread and I'll fix them.

Re: Duplicates

Hello Chris,
   I also found these:

Dunedin Art Galllery:

Kunstmuseum, Saint-Gallen

There is also a strange museum:
said to be the Kunstmuseum of Basle, Germany, whereas Basel (or Bâle in French as the city shares both languages) is in Switzerland. I fear that the paintings listed there are in fact in other Kunstmuseums in Germany.
The "real" Kunstmuseum in Basel is this one:

The Uffizi has three pages!:

To prevent from duplicates, you should decide between translating all the names, or leaving them in original languages. Museo del Prado or Prado Museum?

The Musee d'art Moderne de la Ville de Paris:

Re: Duplicates

Hello Josselin,
I removed all of the duplicates you listed so far. Having a think about the best way to present museums which often go by various names:

1. A name in the local language
2. An English equivalent
3. Maybe a short name, such as just "the Uffizi" instead of "Gallery of the Uffizi"

I'm thinking of a few changes to help with this (although to be honest it's not that bad to periodically clean up duplicates that have crept in):
a. Allow entry of multiple names for a museum
b. Display a museum several times in the lists, under all of its names
c. When entering a new museum, run a search for similar names and show the user an "Are you sure it's not one of these?" box.

For now, I'm just happy to clean up the ones we find.

All museums should also have the English name of the city at the end to avoid any confusion.

Re: Duplicates

The museum system in Germany is really tricky, especially in Berlin. In this city, there is a general State museum system ("Staatliche Museen zu Berlin"), with many museum dependencies, as explained here. So the "Staatliche Museen zu Berlin" is just the body which directs them all, and NOT a museum.
The problem is that it has been created as such on the Athenaeum and now holds 258 artworks, which are actually in other museums (Gemaldegalerie, Alte Nationalgalerie...).
So I recommend to delete this museum and split its holdings between the other museums in Berlin. However, it would need a considerable time to do it... Moreover, several artworks on the web or scientific literature are just marked as displayed in the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, without any further information of the precise gallery.
On the contrary, the "easy" solution would be to delete the other galleries, and just keep the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin.

I am also afraid that this problem exists in a minor extent in the other lander...
