Au rendez-vous
Valérie Rottembourg - circa 1895

Signed. Inscribed the title "au rendez-vous", with a number 1786 (of course not the date of the drawing... May be the date of the scene, but it seems this doesn't match with the clothing), and also "A ma chère Lucie, souvenir d'amitié" (can be translated as: "to my dear Lucie, friendship souvenir"). The drawing comes from a sketchbook dedicated to Lucie Bloc, with other drawings by other artists, dated between 1893 and 1896; the scene looks like an illustration, and there is probably a private reference between the two women (may be linked to a book, a novel...). After some researches, there was a Lucie Bloc who died in 1895... May be it's the same person.

Our Approach:
Here at The Athenaeum, we work very hard to make this site a sanctuary from the commercial web. We want to provide 99% of our content for free (and currently, *all* of it is free), and not to blast you with advertising. However, we are not a rich company or foundation. This site is a labour of love produced over many years by a couple of people. Since late 2000 when we started the site, we have invested thousands of dollars of our personal money to keep it going. Currently, the hosting service costs us about $200 a month. If you would like to support The Athenaeum, you can donate directly through Paypal below, or shop using any of the links on this page.
